Overview

In Summer 2025, I joined SLB as a UX Design Intern on the DrillPlan product team, working on an enterprise well-planning platform used by drilling engineers to plan, simulate, and collaborate on drilling operations.

Due to NDA constraints, this page focuses on my design process, learnings and reflections instead of final deliverables.

Deliverable
1.Data Visualization & Configuration UX

Created interaction patterns for data-heavy visualizations, including configurable chart scale settings and revision indicators, to improve readability, consistency, and decision-making in engineering contexts.

2.Design System & Scalability

Contributed to DrillPlan’s design system by exploring, documenting, and applying consistent design language and reusable components in Figma to support scalable enterprise UX.

3.Workflow & Interaction Design

Designed user flows and interaction solutions for complex, domain-heavy engineering workflows, translating abstract requirements into structured and usable UX across multiple planning scenarios.

4.Cross-functional Delivery & Handoff

Produced clear handoff documentation defining interaction logic, edge cases, and constraints, and supported implementation through ongoing collaboration with portfolio managers and framework developers.

Challenging ToB product, but I Learned a lot.
Designing Beyond the Happy Path

I learned to design with a holistic mindset: considering not only ideal user flows, but also error states, empty states, and edge cases. Constantly reviewing designs from the user’s perspective helped me catch issues early and ensure every deliverable was effective and high-quality.

Design as a Collaborative Discipline

Working on DrillPlan showed me that strong UX is built through collaboration. Timely feedback, clear ownership, and the ability to advocate for design decisions, especially to non-design stakeholders. They were essential to aligning teams and delivering meaningful solutions.

UX in Complex Enterprise Systems

Designing for DrillPlan shifted my mindset from feature-level execution to system-level thinking. I learned how UX bridges technical complexity with intuitive workflows, and why consistency and scalability are critical in enterprise, high-impact systems.

Final Thoughts-Moments with SLB 💙

I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to intern at SLB and be part of the DrillPlan team, working alongside such talented and thoughtful designers. Everyone on the team was incredibly patient and supportive, always willing to take the time to guide me through complex problems and domain knowledge. It was a genuine privilege to learn in this environment.

Designing in a healthy, open, and energetic team culture—where design is used to bridge the gap between complex technology and real users—was both challenging and deeply rewarding. The complexity of B2B systems also significantly broadened my perspective on interaction design and system thinking.

Most importantly, I’d like to thank my teammates Xuanhua Zhang, Qiu Xin, Peiyun, Yuan Yue, and our UX Team Leader Bolei Tan. A supportive and positive team culture like this is what truly motivates meaningful and sustainable design work
